New Media Community Project:
Promotion and Development of Regional Information Systems

This cooperative project, introduced in 1984 by MITI to realize the advanced information society in the 21st century, involves the national government, local municipalities and the private sector in building and revitalizing community life through better collection and use of information on the local level. The New Media Community Project is expected to stimulate small and medium enterprises in local areas through collaborative use of advanced information systems, with the additional benefit of dissolving regional information gaps.

By combining a multitude of new medeia, such as bidirectional CATV, online services/internet and IC card systems, various model information systems will be built that respond to the needs of the local community in the areas of industry, society, and daily life.
