What is the New Media Development Association?

New Media Development Association (or the NMDA), an auxiliary organization of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (or METI), was originally established in 1972 as Visual Information System Development Association to develop the Hi-OVIS (the world first completely interactive optical visual information system). In October of 1984 the organization was renamed New Media Development Association, and modified and expanded to add study and technical consulting for new media and their further applications to its original activities.

Our activities include development in areas of systems for an environment of using Internet such as the Rating and Filtering System and the Electronic Authentication System, information society infrastructure systems such as the Authenticated Secure Electronic Storage System and the Electronic Application System on the Internet, and the Next-Generation IC card Systems, as well as a survey on the Internet.

We promote information systems in areas such as local communities, cities, and for elderly persons, respectively, based on the New Media Community concept, Advanced Information City concept, and Mellow Society concept. Those are for promotion of the information society with diverse point of view.
